Israel & Odessa Education

The Macks Center for Jewish Education works to inspire Baltimore’s youth, families and community members to invest in a personal relationship with Israel through creative learning, relationship-building and experiential opportunities, rooted in the belief that Israel unifies our people and is essential to our identity as Jews. To that end, CJE helps educators find engaging and relevant methods and resources to impart these concepts.

The CJE is also a member of the Baltimore Israel Coalition, a consortium of 20 local organizations, working to support Israel through education, advocacy and community-building. For more information, email advocate@baltglobalimpact.org.

For a listing of community-wide Israel-related programming, visit our Israel Desk, or view the Associated's calender of events.

The CJE also partners with our sister city Odessa. In our "shrinking world", Jewish children, no matter where they live, need to understand the importance of a global Jewish community and there are few opportunities for them to learn this lesson.  Our sister city of Odessa is fertile ground for establishing meaningful people-to-people connections.  In November of 2017 Amalia Phillips, Director of Israel and Overseas Education led a mission to our sister city of Odessa in the Ukraine. A cadre of Jewish educators went to explore the value of Jewish peoplehood that would lead them to collaborate on meaningful and authentic Jewish educational experiences that will energize our partnership and foster new possibilities for long lasting impact.

The participants in the mission were: Rabbi Rachel Blat, Educational Director at Beth Israel; Brad Cohen, Educational Director at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation; Cantor Rhoda Harrison of Har Sinai; Neil Rubin, Chair of the History Department at Beth Tfiloh and Rabbi Moshe Schwartz the headmaster of Krieger Schechter Day School.
