Yom Iyun 5770
Israel: Teaching the Primary Source
RIM-500
Presenters: Western Wall Heritage Foundation,
The Jewish Lens, Melitz
Date: Sunday, December 20
Time: 8:45 am - 12 noon
Location: CJE
Learn how to engage students in learning through the use of primary sources. Why read about Israel, when you can examine artifacts, analyze photography, and hear firsthand accounts of experiences in Eretz Yisrael?
The Kotel Tunnels: LIVE!!! (all attendees)
Engage in real time with an actual archaeologist currently excavating the Kotel tunnels! Our videoconference will allow you to ask questions and learn about the real artifacts being discovered everyday beside the Western Wall. Hear about what we now know about life in ancient Jerusalem and learn how you can help your students participate in a virtual field trip.
Breakout Sessions:
(attendees will participate in one)
The Jewish Lens: Focusing on Photography
Imagine a classroom where students are so immersed in talking about a photograph that time stands still. A space where young teenagers passionately debate and connect around issues of Jewish values, history and text. Where they research Jewish communities - and to boot, learn the craft of photography. Imagine that it’s your classroom. Engage in a study of photographs of Israel. Learn about the land and its people and take back questioning skills and strategies to help your students make the connection.
Experiences in Words: Written and Oral
Every individual experiences Israel differently. From the process of planning a trip or aliyah to visiting holy sites to simply breathing in the smells of the environment and food, Israel speaks to us. How do we use those voices and writings to help students draw their own conclusions? Learn about the variety of speakers available to you as a teacher, and learn how to best utilize travelers' diaries, immigrants, shinshinim, documents, and even your rabbi in engaging conversation to help your students go beyond the textbook and into the human experience.
Congregational Principals will register for teachers to ensure balanced session attendance for each school. Day School Principals interested in sending participants should contact Autumn for seat availability and registration details.
