Groggers
Purim is a loud and raucous holiday. Adding to the din is the sound of “boos,” “hisses,” and noisemakers, called “groggers,” drowning out the villainous name of Haman every time it is heard during the reading of the Purim story. Below are a few ideas for you to create your own “groggers”. Have Fun!
Decorated Cans
Materials:
Cleaned powedered drink or frosting cans (or any small cylindrical containers) – with lids, remov the labels
Seeds, beans or stones – CAUTION: Small objects can cause choking.
Colored masking tape, stickers, sticker dots, yarn
Markers, crayons
Colored construction paper precut to fit can
Glue
Directions
- Decorate the construction paper with masking tape, stickers, sticker dots, markers, and crayons. Use the template designs to draw hamentaschen, groggers, crowns, and megillah scrolls.
- Once decorated, glue the decorated paper to the outside of the can. Fill the can with seeds, beans, or stones until it makes a sound the child likes. Le the child experiment with the different sounds.
- Attach the lid by running glue along the inside edge of the lid. Let your grogger dry thoroughly.
- Shake it when you hear Haman’s name!
Paper Cup Shakers
Materials
Styrofoam Cups
Beans, noodles or pebbles - CAUTION: Small objects can cause choking.
Stickers and small shapes cut out of sticky tape
4 –5 inch square of colored cellophane paper
6-inch length of wide yarn
Plastic spoon
Strong, heavy-duty tape
Directions
- Make a slit in the bottom of the cup.
- From inside the cup, insert the plastic spoon, handle down.
- Inside of the cup, secure the spoon in place with the tape.
- Decorate the outside of the cup with stickers or sticky tape.
- Fill the cup with beans, noodles or pebbles.
- Cove the top of the cup with a cellophane square and secure it with tied yarn.
- Shake it baby, shake it!
