EXECUTIVE'S CORNER

Tu B’Shevat, the New Year for the trees, is heralded in Israel by the first blossoms of the almond tree, but in the height of winter, nothing is blooming in Baltimore. In this newsletter, we will do both. We will highlight some of the CJE connections to Israel, and we will explore our relationship with some of our constituents—the natural world in which CJE flourishes.

There are several ways CJE establishes connections to Israel. We are continually acquiring new Israel-related materials for our Resource Center, as evidenced by the new acquisitions highlighted here. Another is the professional development programming we provide for educators — in this newsletter, we feature Rachel Korazim, who joined us from Israel to teach....

The Baltimore Jewish Council, in collaboration with CJE and the Jewish Museum of Maryland, is sponsoring a Holocaust Commemoration Student Art & Writing Contest. The contest topic is Passing on the Legacy, and students are encouraged to explore their responsibility for continuing Holocaust remembrance when those

who lived during that tragic period can no longer speak for themselves.

Maryland students in grades 6 - 12 are eligible to submit their works for prizes that will be awarded at the community-wide Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration on Sunday, April 23.

We hope teachers will encourage students, and families will invite their
children to participate and use this powerful opportunity to express their
feelings about this vital legacy.

Entries must be received by February 17. For more information,
contact Debbie Caplan at dcaplan@baltjc.org or 410-542-4850.
