PRESIDENT'S CORNER
The Center for Jewish Education is THE ASSOCIATED’s primary planning and service agency devoted to Jewish education. Through our relationships with schools and synagogues, we are in the privileged position to see teachers, students, adults and families engaged in creative and inspiring Jewish education. We are also delighted to see the many advances and creative approaches being implemented in our community’s early childhood programs, day schools and congregational schools.
Dr. Jonas Salk, the renowned medical researcher who discovered the polio vaccine, had a famous saying, which has been adapted and adopted in many ways and places. He said, “Good parents give their children roots and wings: roots to know where home is, and wings to fly away and exercise what's been taught them.” It seems to me that this quote is truly in the spirit of our upcoming holiday, Tu B’Shevat, which is the time when we celebrate the annual “birthday of trees.” CJE and its partner schools are entrusted to work on the roots every day. Roots ground us, connect us to our past and provide us with the base on which we can build a stronger, more vibrant community. Our mission and goals also include the development of wings—wings that will serve as an uplifting resource for students (and aren’t we all students?), propelling them capably and responsibly into the future.
Every day at CJE, we observe the vibrancy of our community and the incredible commitment of our educators. We try to reflect that vibrancy back to and through THE ASSOCIATED, which provides us with support for our many programs and services. We urge you to support THE ASSOCIATED’s Annual Campaign as it heads into its final phase, and thereby guarantee that our Jewish community (which already has deep and solid roots) will sprout beautiful, powerful wings.
